Orthopedic emergency services handle severe bone, joint, and muscle injuries like open fractures, dislocations, or severe sprains, requiring immediate care at an ER or specialized orthopedic urgent care for assessment, stabilization (splinting/casting), pain relief, and potential surgery or advanced imaging (X-ray, MRI) to prevent serious complications like nerve damage or infection, with key actions including immobilization and not trying to reset bones.

When to Go to the ER (Life-Threatening/Severe)

• Open Fractures: Bone pierces the skin.

• Severe Deformity: Obvious dislocation or displacement.

• Neurological Issues: Numbness, tingling, or loss of function in limbs.

• Signs of Infection: Fever, chills, redness with swelling.

• Spinal Injuries: Suspected head, neck, or back trauma; call emergency services.

• Severe Bleeding: Uncontrollable bleeding from a wound.

When to Use Orthopedic Urgent Care (Non-Life-Threatening)

• Stable fractures (bones not significantly displaced).

• Severe sprains and strains.

• Acute sports injuries.

• Minor dislocations (e.g., shoulder separation).

• These centers offer X-rays, splinting, and faster service than ERs for focused orthopedic issues.

What Orthopedic Services Provide

• Diagnosis: Physical exams, X-rays, sometimes CT/MRI.

• Stabilization: Splints, casts, braces.

• Pain Management: Medications.

• Procedures: Closed reduction (manipulating bones back in place), wound cleaning, surgical fixation (ORIF) for complex breaks.

First Aid Before Professional Help

• Don't Move: If spine/neck injury suspected.

• Immobilize: Use a splint (cardboard, rolled magazine) to prevent movement.

• RICE (for minor injuries): Rest, Ice (15-20 mins), Compression (light bandage), Elevation.

• Control Bleeding: Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth.

• Avoid: Giving food/water if surgery might be needed; don't try to push dislocated joints back in.

A state-of-the-art fully functional,10-bedded Emergency Room has recently been inaugurated in NOH. This is manned  by a ER doctor, A nurse and a paramedic providing all kinds of orthopaedic and trauma emergency services . Besides these, dressings, plaster application, plaster cutting and minor procedures are done 24/7 by paramedics stationed in the ER. Trauma patients are assessed and admitted from the emergency if  surgical interventions are needed. Similarly, patients reffered from other hospital and medical centers are planned for surgery from ER.

The hospital operates two ambulances for transferring patients in and out of the hospital.
